If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal.                If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but don’t have love, I am nothing.                If I dole out all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but don’t have love, it profits me nothing.                Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,                doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 13:6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;                bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.                Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.

Quotations about illnesses

But the All-seeing Lord, the God of Israel, struck him with a ** fatal and invisible stroke; and as soon as he had ceased speaking this word, an incurable pain of the bowels seized him, and bitter torments of the inner parts;

and that most justly, for he had tormented other men’s bowels with many and strange sufferings.

But he in no wise ceased from his rude insolence; nay, still more was he filled with arrogancy, breathing fire in his passion against the Jews, and commanding to haste the journey. But it came to pass moreover that he fell from his chariot as it rushed along, and having a grievous fall was racked in all the members of his body.

And he that but now supposed himself to have the waves of the sea at his bidding, so vainglorious was he beyond the condition of a man, and that thought to weigh the heights of the mountains in a balance, was now brought to the ground and carried in a litter, †† showing to all that the power was manifestly God’s;

so that out of the body of the impious man worms swarmed, and while he was still living in anguish and pains, his flesh fell off, and by reason of the stench all the army turned with loathing from his corruption.

And the man that a little before supposed himself to touch the stars of heaven, no one could endure to carry for his intolerable stench.

The Second Book of the Maccabees 9:5-10

{21:12} A letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of David your father, 'Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

{21:13} but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the prostitute, like the house of Ahab did, and also have slain your brothers of your father's house, who were better than yourself:

{21:14} behold, Yahweh will strike with a great plague your people, and your children, and your wives, and all your substance;

{21:15} and you shall have great sickness by disease of your bowels, until your bowels fall out by reason of the sickness, day by day.'"

{21:16} Yahweh stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians who are beside the Ethiopians:

{21:17} and they came up against Judah, and broke into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house, and his sons also, and his wives; so that there was never a son left him, except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

{21:18} After all this Yahweh struck him in his bowels with an incurable disease.

{21:19} It happened, in process of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness, and he died of severe diseases.

The Second Book of Chronicles 21:12-19

Give not over your soul to sorrow; and afflict not yourself in your own counsel.
Gladness of heart is the life of a man; and the joyfulness of a man is length of days.
Love your own soul, and comfort your heart: and remove sorrow far from you; for sorrow has destroyed many, and there is no profit therein.
Envy and wrath shorten a man’s days; and care brings old age before the time.

The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach 30:21-24

Honor a physician according to your need of him with the honors due to him:
For truly the Lord has created him.
For from the Most High comes healing;
And from the king he shall receive a gift.
The skill of the physician shall lift up his head;
And in the sight of great men he shall be admired.
The Lord created medicines out of the earth;
And a prudent man will have no disgust at them.
Was not water made sweet with wood,
That the virtue thereof might be known?
And he gave men skill,
That * they might be glorified in his marvelous works.
With them does he heal a man,
And takes away his pain.
With these will the apothecary make a confection;
And his works shall not be brought to an end;
And from him is peace upon the face of the earth.
My son, in your sickness be not negligent;
But pray to the Lord, and he shall heal you.
Put away wrong doing, and order your hands aright,
And cleanse your heart from all manner of sin.
Give a sweet savor, and a memorial of fine flour;
And make fat your offering, as one that is not.
Then give place to the physician, for truly the Lord has created him;
And let him not go from you, for you have need of him.
There is a time when in their very hands is the issue for good.
For they also shall beseech the Lord,
That he may prosper them in giving relief and in healing for the maintenance of life.
He that sins before his Maker,
Let him fall into the hands of the physician.

The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach 38:1-15

Be not insatiable in any luxury, And be not greedy on the things that you eatest.
For in multitude of meats there shall be disease, And surfeiting shall come near to colic.
Because of surfeiting have many perished; But he that takes heed shall prolong his life.

The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach 37:29-31

{17:22} A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Proverbs 17:22

In all your works be quick, and no disease shall come to you.

The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach 31:22

Two million people died with coronavirus last year, and 42 million died of abortions.

Father Jacek, a Catholic priest.

For of a truth it was neither herb nor mollifying plaister that cured them, But your word, O Lord, which heals all things.

The Wisdom of Solomon 16:12

In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet; his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he didn't seek Yahweh, but to the physicians.

The Second Book of Chronicles 16:12

"Thus says Yahweh, the God of David your father, 'Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah, but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the prostitute, like the house of Ahab did, and also have slain your brothers of your father's house, who were better than yourself: behold, Yahweh will strike with a great plague your people, and your children, and your wives, and all your substance; and you shall have great sickness by disease of your bowels, until your bowels fall out by reason of the sickness, day by day.'"

The Second Book of Chronicles 21:12-15

Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
