By Testimony, Alcohol took over my husband, and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to cope on my own… I prayed a lot and asked God for help. But instead, things got worse… My life and that of my husband had plenty of ups and downs. Our first child was born two years after our marriage. I stopped working and took care of our home and child. My husband was working, but he started to drink more often. When I was pregnant with our second son, he fell gravely ill. He spent six months in hospital. It was a very difficult time for me and for the whole family. We prayed very hard for the good health of my husband. We had to wait a long time for his recovery from his critical condition. I was very worried that I would be on my own with two children. I didn’t know yet what awaited me further in life. God decided that my husband would live, and the day before our son’s birth, he returned home. We were all very happy. Four years later, our third son was born, then three years after that, two more – twins. So we have five sons, and we are very happy about it, because not everyone can have as many children as we do – it’s a special grace given to us by God and for which I’m very grateful. And everything would have been good were it not for alcohol, which came back into my husband’s life after the birth of the twins… It was a terrible period for me, our children and the whole family. Words cannot describe what we went through; it has to be lived. Nothing helped us – neither appeal nor threat. Alcohol took over my husband, and I knew that I wouldn’t be able to cope on my own… I prayed a lot and asked God for help. But instead, things got worse… I prayed that His will would be done and not mine. My husband’s condition got much worse, and he felt increasingly bad each day. For our fifteenth wedding anniversary, I requested a Mass intention. Six months later, my husband got sick, and his condition became critical. I called the emergency services. I was very afraid that the ambulance wouldn’t arrive on time and my husband would die in my hands without the holy sacraments, without confession and the Holy Eucharist. I begged God and all the saints for my husband not to not die at home without the sacraments. He was taken to hospital; there he had his confession and received Jesus in the Holy Communion. He also received the last rites, and then he died. I was then convinced how the Lord Jesus fulfills his promise. He said to Saint Faustina: “The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death” (Diary 754); “Oh, what graces I will grant to souls who say this chaplet; the very depths of My tender mercy are stirred for the sake of those who say the chaplet. Write down these words My daughter. Speak to the world about My mercy; let all mankind recognize my unfathomable mercy. It is a sign for the end times; after it will come the day of justice. While there is still time, let them have recourse to the fount of My mercy; let them profit from the Blood and Water which gushed forth for them” (Diary 848). The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which was often prayed by my husband, and his devotion on the nine first Fridays of the month saved him from death in sin. I was left alone with five children, but I know that God will not allow any harm to afflict us. My husband will intercede for us before the Merciful God. Thanks to God’s providence, I know I’ll get by and will bring up our children as good people.
